Capturing The First Year

Capturing The First Year {eight months}

A few months in to Capturing The First Year, quite honestly I remember questioning what I’d gotten myself committed to! I worried that I wouldn’t find the time to complete the challenge or that I would start to lack the inspiration and even motivation to continue these monthly check-ins! Raise your hand if you find you start things but rarely finish them! And I am not taking about a glass of wine here :-)

Surprisingly two things have happened…. Continue reading “Capturing The First Year {eight months}”

Shooting In Manual, Tips

Shooting In Manual {Baby’s Playtime}

Did you invest in a high end camera only to find that you’re stuck on automode; confused by the harsh flash light that pops up, yellow or green tinted images or blurry movement?

This post has been put together with the parent in mind, looking to take better pictures of their baby. With a focus on photographing your baby during their playtime, I’ll guide you through some tips on how to use your dslr and the standard kit lens (I promise my beloved prime lens will stay in the bag!)  Continue reading “Shooting In Manual {Baby’s Playtime}”

Capturing The First Year

Capturing The First Year {five months}

Nearing six months you’ll definitely not want to miss all that your infant is able to do right now. Showing off his new found skills and doing them repeatedly as you shoot away! Admittedly I have a million and one images taken on my phone over these five months of my three boys but once a month I plan a mini styled session with the baby to really home in on the changes and hope to capture him in his everyday environment with shots that are also wall-display worthy! Capturing The First Year

Capturing The First Year {Two Months}

If you have ever done a search for tips on how to photograph a two month old, you have probably come up empty! Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be too much inspiration out there for this age. They are definitely out of the sleepy newborn stage, yet unable to sit, tummy time is a short lived affair and they will most definitely not be happy being squeezed up into different positions. So you’re pretty much left with laid-on-back with arms and legs rigorously moving at the speed of light! Not incredibly flattering if truth be told. On the plus side, they are not quite at the three month (cute) blob stage ;-)

Okay, okay Dr Skeptismo has left the building! I’d like to offer some starting tips that will help you creatively photograph your two month old. Continue reading “Capturing The First Year {Two Months}”

Capturing The First Year

Capturing The First Year {One Month}

As I prepared for our third child’s arrival, I never questioned if I’d love him as much as my other two. But, I did wonder with him being the third, if I’d ever have those overwhelmingly beautiful moments that I experienced with my first. Especially seeing as the novelty of pregnancy was long gone! (Been there, done that, got the t-shirt!) Continue reading “Capturing The First Year {One Month}”

Capturing The First Year {Newborn}

I was crazily excited to photograph my own sleeping newborn! Though I loved each and every newborn session I was able to do with the families I worked with during the time of my business,  there was something about it being my own that would take the pressure off a little! I’d have endless time and no interruptions, if I missed a moment I could just go ahead and redo it the next day, right?! All of my previous newborn sessions had taken place in the studio where the variation of lighting and change in focal points was limited. This left me longing to use natural light, making the most of my prime lens.
